Tyres are the only contact between your car and the road. Worn or under-inflated tyres increase stopping distance and risk aquaplaning.
Minimum tread depth
Across the central three-quarters of the tread breadth and around the entire circumference, tread must be at least 1.6 mm. Many garages recommend replacing at 3 mm for wet-weather safety.
20p coin test
Insert a 20p into the main grooves. If the outer band of the coin is visible, the tyre may be at or below the limit — have it measured professionally.
Pressure
Use the pressures in the door pillar, fuel flap or handbook — not the figure moulded on the tyre sidewall. Check when cold monthly and before long journeys.
Damage
Bulges, cuts exposing ply, and screws in the tread should be assessed immediately. We offer puncture repair where safe and legal.
